Lesson
Volume of Cylinder
Created By: Cornelio Mauricio
This lesson combines math and computer science by teaching students to calculate cylinder volume while developing mobile applications in Code.org’s App Lab. Students learn to use the cylinder volume formula, connect it to rectangular prism formulas, and create apps with interactive features like buttons, text, images, and sound to solve culturally relevant community problems. Day 1 follows an “I do, we do, you do” structure where the teacher demonstrates a math app, students explore it together, then individually plan their own culturally relevant mobile applications in their journals.
Utah Native History
Created By: Lily Stice
This 5-day creative coding lesson teaches 8th graders to distinguish between apps and games while creating culturally relevant applications using Code.org’s App Lab. Students learn app development fundamentals including wireframing, user interface design, and coding basics, then apply these skills to create multi-frame applications featuring their own heritage or Native American cultures. The lesson emphasizes culturally responsive pedagogy by allowing predominantly Latino students to explore their Mexican, Guatemalan, or other cultural backgrounds through technology, making coding education personally meaningful and inclusive.
